This is a good video. I’ve been swimming and surfing for a few years now and although I know what a rip is and how to use/negotiate them I suck at recognizing them. I’ve tended to look for turbulent water but this vid suggests looking more for flat spots. I’ll give it a go.
Thanks for your feedback H. Rips are better seen from up above. You can start looking for darker blue patches, which will have that relatively flat surface. They can have churned up sand and seaweed in them too. Hard to spot anything at Ocean Grove – at 13th beach and Point Lonsdale back beach, they are a bit more defined.
